What is a Fit to Fly or Pre-departure Test?

Fit to Fly is a protein antigen lateral flow test or a PCR test that you may have to take prior to travelling if you are departing from the UK. It can be within 24 hours, 48 hours or 72 hours before traveling.

Please confirm the type of test and the time interval before travelling with the country of arrival and your airline/transport of choice. Our Fit-to-Fly test includes online portal access with certificate and customer service assistance.

    What is PCR?

A PCR test is used to detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the nasal swab by analysing the sample for the presence of at least one virus-specific gene.

It is the most sensitive test available for SARS-Cov-2 detection but the test procedure is complex and takes longer than an hour for the detection reaction to be completed in the laboratory.

    What is RT-PCR?

RT PCR means Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction and is used to detect the virus SARS-CoV-2. Circular1 Health uses this technique and it will be on your certificate.

What is a LFT/LFD Test, Protein antigen lateral flow?

LFD = Lateral Flow Device often referred to as a LFT or Lateral Flow Test.

A protein antigen lateral flow test is used to detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the nasal swab by analysing the sample for the presence of a virus-specific protein (the “protein antigen”) that is a component part of the virus itself.

The detection method uses the well-established lateral flow format (i.e. as used in pregnancy testing); the test procedure is simple to carry out and has the advantage of being the quickest method for SARS-Cov-2 detection.

The sensitivity of a lateral flow test when used at home is lower than PCR but in a laboratory environment using trained technical staff the performance of the test can be upgraded significantly.

    What is NAAT

NAAT means Nucleic Acid Amplification Test and is a general term to describe the technologies in use in the Circular1 Health laboratories for SARS-CoV-2 detection.
